California labor code section 500-558
510. (a)Eight hours of labor constitutes a day᠆s work. Any work in excess of eight hours in one workday and any work in excess of 40 hours in any one workweek and the first eight hours worked on the seventh day of work in any one workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than one and one-hal times the rate of pay for an employee. Any work in excess of 12 hours in one day shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay for an employee. In addition, any work in excess of eight hours on any seventh day of a workweek shall be compensated at the rate of no less than twice the regular rate of pay of an employee.
Because 50 hour weeks are NOT industry standards.
Because 50 hours and 50+ hour weeks are illegal, they destroy your personal life and attempt against your health.
Because 50 hour weeks don't allow you to have a regular life. As artists we need this time to regenerate, study, exercise, get inspired, rest.
Because studies show that designers that are more rested and have clear targets, work more efficiently than overworked artists.
Because we deserve to love what we do and not get burned out on a path that we chose out of love for creativity.
Because artists are not tools that can be disposed, replaced, used or burned at the whim of clients.
Because artists deserve credit and in some cases residuals for their work.
Because you shouldn't worry about living paycheck to paycheck.
Because you deserve decent medical coverage.
Because you deserve a 401k.
Because pay rates are not a dirty word.
A flexible hourly rate standard for different levels of experiences will give producers more accurate numbers and artists a fair pay.
But if there is a union no one will hire.
All the jobs will leave my state. It will be impossible to produce motion graphics.
Artists are exempt from the law.
What myths have you heard ?
A union is a strong network of colleagues, the more members that belong to it, the more access you will have to referrals and jobs.

The main cause of rising costs are caused by mishandling of time, a lack of understanding of the creative process, a lack of production experience and client abuse. With clear schedules, a clean pipeline and reasonable expectations all jobs can be created in reasonable hours.

Artists are not exempt from a 40 hour week, only those who are in charge of teams, creative direction and upper management.
